Reflections Term 2 Week 1

It is the first week of term 2. We have spent every period in the computer labs finishing stuff off from last term that we didn't complete, nothing new. Our progress was hindered by the fact that there were computer problems for the double period.

Marine Grade Ply Research

- Marine grade ply has a very high tensile strength due to the multiple layers it is made up of.
- The hardness of this material is very high, it is not soft.
- Marine grade ply has a very low ductility, it is very strong & rigid.
- It would take a lot of pressure to make marine grade ply to collapse due to it's high shear strength.

Flax Research

- The tensile strength for flax is rougly medium, it can be broken more easily depending on how thick it is.
- The hardness for flax is around medium, it is not too hard or too soft
- Flax has a very high ductility, it is not just a straight solid material.
- Shear strength for flax is medium, similar to tensile strength.

Epoxy Resin Research

- The tensile strength of epoxy resin is extremely high, it can resist an immense amount of pressure before it reaches breaking point.
- The hardness of epoxy resin is naturally very high but it can be modified to be soft.
- When epoxy resin has been applied to a material it has a very low ductility, if it didn't it wouldn't be a very good adhesive.
- Shear strength for epoxy resin is very high, epoxy resin won't collapse on itself.

Reflections Term 1 Week 8

Not much new stages were started this week, just an hour or 2 in the computer labs finshing things off on our blogs & a bit of fixing up our stringers so they were adequate enough for our boards. No problems were experienced this week.

Reflections Term 1 Week 7

For the start of Week 7, we cut down a ton of flax and started a process of weaving flax together to make our board stronger. This quickly turned into a very laborious process. The rest of the periods for this week seemed to pass by rather slowly, 3 lesson of stripping flax and weaving it together. However by the time we finished we felt we accomplished something worthwhile which would keep our board stronger. There were no major problems this week, just a few people lost their flax.

Reflections Term 1 Week 6

Week 6. We quickly finished our mock-ups on the first day of the week as well as visiting the computer labs. Next we started a task where we had to record every step we made in creating our designs on Freehand. My progress was roughly 6 steps, it wasn't much but it showed everything I did. This task did not take long and I finished it the following day.

Reflections Term 1 Week 5

During week 5 we spent roughly 2 periods fixing up & completing our mock-ups. We also started researching on the materials we were going to be using in our boards, a.k.a. Fibreglass & Epoxy Resin. There weren't any problems for this week.

Reflections Term 1 Week 10

In Week 10 we went to the field & cut some more flax so that the rest of the class could finish stripping it for their boards & then we spent some more time in the computer labs fixing up our blogs, we spent two periods doing this, there were no problems encountered this week.

Reflections Term 1 Week 4

On Monday we spent a double period in town to find individual places which would suit riding a longboard. We took photos of these places, one which was just the location and one which had us in it. On Wednesday we put the photos onto Terry's Macbook and on Thursday we started designing our mock ups. Our finished product will be twice the size of our cardboard cutouts. I took a bit of time to find the place s where we wanted to take our pictures.
